***IMPORTANT NOTICE***
Orange County Animal Services recently experienced confirmed cases of canine distemper virus at its shelter. This is a highly contagious, airborne virus that is often fatal. The disease is spread in the community and presents the same symptoms as other upper respiratory illnesses such as kennel cough.
Since our shelter is on high alert for this virus, we are temporarily suspending the spay/neuter surgeries provided to public-owned animals starting February 2, 2010 until April 5, 2010. During this time, we are continuing to sterilize those animals who have been approved for our adoption, foster and rescue programs.
We strongly encourage citizens to visit their veterinarian to have their pets vaccinated against the distemper virus. If you have any further questions or need more information, please contact the shelter at (407) 254-9150.
